Automobile GPS Are Great Devices For Motorists

There are many types of automobile GPS devices in the market today. In fact, they are so common now; almost all new automobile models have GPS devices as standard equipment. It was not so long ago, that GPS devices were expensive options. Automobile GPS devices help people save time and energy. Basically, an automobile GPS is convenient, affordable and easy to use.

If you get lost on a journey, you can easily get out of that situation and find your way back with your automobile GPS. You can either obtain a 2 dimensional positioning if you receive information from 3 satellites or 3 dimensional positioning if you receive information from 4 satellites. The GPS is a system built, operated and owned by the US. It was initially used exclusively the US military. Sin the late 1980s, through legislative changes, the GPS satellite system was open for civilian use. The US' GPS is called NAVSTAR.

There are other satellite-based navigation systems developed by various countries. These alternative systems will result in the development of alternative and multiple versions of automobile GPS. They include the following either in use or in various states of development:

1 Beidou - China's regional system that she has proposed to expand into a global system named COMPASS.

2 Galileo - The European Union's a proposed global system being developed with joint participation by China, Israel, India, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Ukraine. Planned to be operational by 2011-12.

3 GLONASS - Russia's global system which is being restored to full availability in partnership with India.

4 Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS) - India's proposed regional satellite-based system.

5 QZSS - Japan's proposed regional system, adding better coverage to the Japanese islands.

The Global Positioning System or GPS is a constellation of at least 24 satellites which orbit the earth twice a day at the altitude of 12,600 miles. The GPS space segment consists of six orbital planes that require a minimum of four satellites in each, to operate. The GPS control segment consists of five monitoring stations to track the satellites and tabulate their combined information to update any changes and also synchronize their atomic clocks to within a microsecond.

Now, you can find that ships, glider pilots, mountain climbers and airplanes also use this technology in the same way that your automobile GPS does. Geocachers use handheld GPS devices to look for an item that transmits a signal that is misplaced, missing or hidden.
