A Portable GPS System Helps You Get Around Easily
Since the GPS technology has matured so much over the last few decades, it has become possible for many people to own portable GPS systems. In fact, it has become so ubiquitous that increasingly GPS can be found embedded in many more devices. It is very common to find portable GPS systems as handhelds, in mobile phones and in all types of vehicles. There was a time when devices that had portable GPS systems were used exclusively by businesses and the emergencies services. Now portable GPS systems can be found in many general devices used by people in general. In fact, legislation was enacted that requires mobile phones to be equipped with a GPS signal emitter. It was discovered that when someone in distress made an emergency call to 911, they were frequently unable to provide a clear description of their exact location. Emergency service providers were then unable to get to them fast enough. Since all mobile phones have these GPS emitters, they have become the most common portable GPS systems. Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) fitted with portable GPS systems are very commonly used by salesmen, delivery staff and other service providers. Some of these PDAs have software that can work with the GPS to establish routes that are efficient by grouping customers together by location. Besides PDAs, laptops also can be used as portable GPS systems as long they have been installed. In addition, GPS based software downloaded from the Internet are being used for mapping, route planning and the planning of stops for rest and recreation. With the improvements in these portable GPS systems, the police and fire services are discovering newer ways to get to people in distress so that lives can be saved. Only a few years ago, portable GPS systems were considered special-purpose and expensive devices used only by emergency service professionals or by businesses that could afford them. The heightened demand for these portable GPS systems have meant that more units are being manufactured and sold by distributors. This has led to the fall of these devices and increasingly more people can afford to purchase their own portable GPS systems. Apart from the serious purposes that portable GPS systems are used for; they are increasingly also being used for sports and entertainment. One good example is Geocaching. In this game players with PDAs loaded with portable GPS systems compete to locate small items that have GPS based emitters hidden in them. Competitive glider pilots also use portable GPS systems to prove that they have reached certain race markers. In addition, you can also find that watches and cameras are also equipped with portable GPS systems. Portable GPS systems are very useful for people on vacation, since some of these devices have built-in cameras that can create photos with the latitude and longitude of the place where they were taken. Furthermore, it can also be used to track pets or valuables that may wander off. The technology of portable GPS systems has matured to the state where many devices can be equipped with GPS emitters and be tracked easily.
